Sylvain Bailly is a family-owned winery in the heart of Sancerre, in France’s Loire Valley, where Sauvignon Blanc reigns supreme. With a focus on expressing the character of the region’s distinctive soils and vineyards, the estate crafts wines that balance freshness, minerality, and concentrated fruit. One of Sancerre’s most celebrated sites is Le Chêne Marchand, widely considered an iconic “Grand Cru” of the appellation. Its caillottes soils consist of thin, well-draining topsoil scattered with pebbly Oxfordian limestone and small amounts of clay, resting on soft limestone bedrock. The vineyard’s warm, south and southwest-facing exposure allows the limestone rocks to retain heat, encouraging optimal ripeness while preserving the natural acidity that gives the wines their freshness, precision, and remarkable balance.

Beyond Sancerre, Sylvain Bailly also produces wine in neighboring Quincy, one of the Loire Valley’s oldest appellations and an often-overlooked source of excellent Sauvignon Blanc. While Quincy shares Sancerre’s signature freshness and citrus-driven profile, its wines offer their own expression of the grape and often come at a more approachable price. 2024 "Chêne Marchand" Sancerre
Bright flavors of green apple, quince, and stone fruit mingle with lemon-lime citrus zest and delicate white flowers. Grown in Sancerre’s prized caillottes soils, this Sauvignon Blanc offers pronounced stony minerality, concentrated fruit, and refreshing acidity, with lees aging adding texture and depth. With the structure and balance to age gracefully for 5–10 years, it can develop complex tertiary notes of dried herbs, honeyed citrus, and crushed stone.
