The 2016 vintage marked the second exceptional year in a row for Brunello di Montalcino. A balanced growing season and cooler conditions compared with 2015 helped produce wines with vibrant acidity, firm tannins, and impressive structure, while still offering plenty of ripe fruit and complexity. James Suckling called 2015 and 2016 “the greatest ever for Brunello di Montalcino,” noting that the quality extended from lesser-known estates to some of the region’s most prestigious producers.

Casanuova delle Cerbaie is a small, family-run estate located just below the village of Montalcino. The estate began producing wine in the early 1980s and today focuses on expressing the character of its vineyards through Sangiovese. Its vineyards sit at around 350 meters above sea level, with northwestern exposure and a mix of limestone, marl, clay, and conglomerate soils. Careful work in the vineyards and traditional aging in large Slavonian oak help create Brunellos that balance the depth and structure of the vintage with the distinctive character of the estate.

"This has a perfumed nose of cloves, lavender and chocolate-coated raspberries and plums. Some macadamia nut and praline. This has a full body and sleek, well knit tannins. There is elegance from layers of praline and dried raspberries. Drink after 2024."
-James Suckling, 95 Points

"The flagship bottling of the estate, fruit comes from a mix of their vineyard holdings, most of which are located on the hill of Montosoli endowing this wine with a more lifted and floral character than is typical of most of Montalcino.

Brunello di Montalcino is a visibly limpid, brilliant wine, with a bright garnet color. It has an intense perfume, persistent, ample and ethereal. One can recognize scents of undergrowth, aromatic wood, berries, light vanilla and jam. To the taste the wine has an elegant harmonious body, vigorous and racy, it is dry with a lengthy aromatic persistence."
-Winemaker Notes
