Made from 100% Sangiovese, this wine draws on grapes from vineyards on the southeast and southwest slopes of Montalcino, at altitudes of 250 to 400 meters above sea level. Rosso di Montalcino is often considered Brunello's more approachable sibling: made from the same Sangiovese grapes and terroir, but released younger and with shorter aging requirements, making it a wine to enjoy sooner rather than cellar for the long term.
The southeast-facing soils are sandy loam, layered with limestone plates and rich in heavy stones. After several months aging in French and Slavonian oak, the wine rests further in bottle before release. It shows a deep ruby red color with violet highlights, and an aroma that's intensely fruity and fresh, with notes of cherry, plum, and sour cherry. On the palate, it's smooth and mineral, with good structure and well-balanced tannins.
"Vibrant and translucent ruby. On the nose, a raspberry-blackberry back-and-forth, with herbal notes and mild anise aroma. Tobacco and dried sage. On the palate, it's smooth, ample, and generous with the fruit, but well-framed by mild tannins and lively acid. The finish is long, dry and quite refreshing for a Sangiovese. It's delicious as a stand-alone glass, but really comes alive with food. Think pasta with wild boar ragù, herb-roasted porchetta, or an eggplant parmesan."
