Established in 1890 by a consortium of five forward-thinking growers, the Bodega was envisioned as a means to tap into the burgeoning export market for finely crafted, 'modern' Rioja wines. With French vineyards devastated by phylloxera, discerning connoisseurs sought alternatives, turning their attention to regions like Rioja, renowned for its exceptional climate and soils. Embracing Bordeaux-style vinification techniques and barrique-aging experiments, Rioja quickly gained recognition for its quality offerings. However, its geographical isolation posed a challenge, limiting access to lucrative markets in the north. The construction of a rail link to Bilbao provided a solution, leading to the establishment of Bodegas La Rioja Alta next to the Haro railway station in its inaugural year.

In 1904, La Rioja Alta absorbed Bodegas Ardanza, securing access to some of the most prestigious vineyards in the Rioja Alta district. The creation of the luxury 904 bottling commemorated this pivotal moment in the company's evolution. Despite encountering adversity over the years, including periods of decline and the tarnishing of the region's reputation by subpar producers, La Rioja Alta remained steadfast in upholding stringent standards. Upholding the tradition of meticulous long-aging, characteristic of Rioja wines, the winery continues to produce wines renowned for their complexity, rich flavors, silky texture, and readiness for immediate enjoyment upon release.

"Bright, deep ruby color with dark cherry hues on the rim of the glass. It stands out for its intensity, with red fruit aromas (strawberries, raspberries, redcurrant and cherry) leading to elegant notes of vanilla, toffee, coffee cream, cinnamon, brioche and hazelnuts. The balance between acidity and alcohol stands out on the palate, with soft, sweet, rounded tannins and a pleasant final sensation."
