Trefethen Family Vineyards is a historic winery in the Oak Knoll District of Napa Valley, founded in 1968 by Eugene and Katie Trefethen. The estate is built around a striking wooden winery building constructed in 1886 by Hamden McIntyre, one of the few surviving 19th-century wood-frame wineries in Napa Valley and now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Trefethens were pioneers in replanting Napa with premium wine grapes after Prohibition-era decline, and their roughly 600-acre estate remains entirely estate-grown and family-farmed.
The winery is particularly known for its Chardonnay and Riesling, benefiting from the cooler microclimate of the Oak Knoll District, as well as excellent Cabernet Sauvignon and other Bordeaux varietals from warmer pockets of the property. The estate has passed through succeeding generations of the Trefethen family, with Jon and Janet Trefethen (children of the founders) having led the winery for decades, continuing a philosophy centered on sustainable, estate-only farming and a lighter, more elegant style relative to some of Napa's richer, more extracted wines.
