During the eighteenth century, Château La Gurgue initially belonged to the parish of Margaux, which oversaw the cultivation and winemaking of the finest parcels in the Margaux region. Reflecting the splendor of Margaux's terroir, the estate of Château La Gurgue was eventually sold during the French Revolution. Subsequently, a dispute arose among the mayors vying for control of the municipality of Margaux, leading to two mayors, Mr. Lanoire and Mr. Lavandier, each becoming successive owners of Château La Gurgue.

In 1978, Jacques Merlaut acquired Château La Gurgue and entrusted it to his sole daughter, Bernadette. She inherited a property that had nearly fallen into disrepair but embarked on a journey to revitalize it. Through renovations, vineyard replanting, and dedicated care, she rejuvenated this esteemed wine estate, breathing life into it with each passing vintage. A decade later, her efforts were rewarded when 50 esteemed tasters convened by "L'Essai sur le style de Margaux" recognized Château La Gurgue as one of the ten most emblematic wines of Margaux, standing shoulder to shoulder with eight Grands Crus Classés of the appellation. Following Bernadette's passing, Claire succeeded her mother, continuing to refine the style of La Gurgue wine: alluring, authentic, and heartfelt.

“Tight and chewy with currant and blueberry character. Medium body, a lovely center palate and a subtle finish. Pretty continuation to the 2015.

-James Suckling, 94 Points

"A delicious wine that can already be approached with pleasure, the 2016 La Gurgue bursts with aromas of blackberries and cherries mingled with hints of licorice and violets. Medium-bodied, ample and seamless, it's a charming, enveloping wine that exhibits beautiful purity of fruit, supple structuring tannins and a nicely defined finish. It exemplifies the elegant, sensual style typical of this Sousans property."
