The roots of this legacy trace back to Francis Vernay, who planted the initial vines on a sun-drenched south-facing hillside at the foot of the Coteau du Vernon in 1937. The inaugural vintage of Coteau de Vernon emerged in 1940. Upon inheriting the estate in the early 1950s, Georges Vernay undertook a transformative journey, expanding vineyards and crafting terraces. The estate's growth continued under Christine Vernay, George's daughter, who expanded holdings in Saint-Joseph, Côte Rôtie, and Collines Rhodaniennes, all dedicated to Syrah cultivation. Consequently, Domaine Georges Vernay is now celebrated not only for its exceptional Viognier but also for its distinguished Syrah offerings.
"Chaillées" originates from the local dialect, signifying 'rocky' and is a reference to the stone walls shaping the terraces of the vineyard. Visitors frequently express "On est à l’Enfer," meaning "We are in Hell," attributing it to the scorching heat experienced on the south-facing vineyard plots. As a result, the wine is aptly named, loosely translating to: "The Rocky Walls of Hell."
"The 2019 Condrieu Les Chaillees De L'Enfer is a step up. From a site next to Vernon and brought up in foudre and barrel (15% new), its medium gold hue is followed by a terrific nose of white peach, hints of orange blossom, flowers, and honeysuckle, with just a kiss of toasty nuances. It too holds onto a terrific sense of purity and freshness and has a great finish. It never has the weight or density of the Coteau de Vernon but has a more vibrant style all its own. It’s a gorgeous wine."

"From the mid-slope portion of the lieu-dit of La Caille, from vines planted in the 1960's and '70's, the 2019 Condrieu les Chaillees de l'Enfer ratchets up the intensity over the entry-level Les Terrasses de l'Enfer. Rich, ripe notes of melon and apricot are joined by hints of spring flowers and toasted grain (this cuvée spends a year in a mix of foudre and barrique, 20% new). It's medium to full-bodied, fleshy and opulent, balanced by a long, spicy finish. Best After 2021."
