Schiavenza, situated in Serralunga d'Alba at the heart of Piedmont's renowned Langhe district, is home to some of the finest Barolo vineyards. Founded in 1956 by brothers Vittorio and Ugo Alessandria, the estate takes its name from the Piemontese dialect word for sharecropper—“schiavenza”—a tribute to the laborers who once tended these vineyards when the property served as a hospital and school under the Opera Pia Barolo.
Today, the second-generation Alessandria sisters, Enrica and Maura, along with their husbands, Luciano Pira and Walter Anselma, manage the estate. Committed to traditional and organic practices, they forgo pesticides and herbicides in favor of sustainable techniques like cover cropping. Harvesting is done manually, in alignment with lunar phases. In the cellar, only naturally occurring yeasts are used, and fermentation takes place in cement cisterns, with maceration lasting 20 to 25 days.
