Jesse Katz’s 2021 Aperture Cellars Del Rio Vineyard Cabernet stands as one of the finest examples of California Cabernet. At just 40, Katz has already built an impressive resume. He crafted a wine that sold for $1 million at auction and produced a Malbec that Robert Parker suggested "may be the finest I have ever tasted from California." Katz has been recognized as a Wine Enthusiast 40 Under 40 Tastemaker, a Wine Spectator Rising Star, and was the first winemaker to appear on Forbes' 30 Under 30 list.
The 2021 Del Rio Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon embodies refined power, shaped by its distinctive hillside location in the southeast corner of Alexander Valley. The chalky volcanic soils, low in organic matter, naturally limit the vines' growth, resulting in concentrated, complex fruit that reflects the vineyard's unique terroir.
"In the glass, it pours a dark purple hue and shows off a brooding profile, with a classic cologne of leather, cigar box, plum compote, savory herbs, graphite, and dried flowers. Full-bodied, it’s commanding in its structure, with ripe tannins that take on a more noble texture, a long finish, and fresh red fruit coming through on the back palate. It demands time in the cellar and is going to need another 5 or more years."
