In 1986, Tom Hedges, a native of Washington, embarked on his wine industry journey by promoting American wines in Taiwan. Starting as a "virtual" winery, Hedges Cellars found its inaugural customer in the Swedish government, marking the beginning of their international ventures. For the initial two years, Tom and his wife Anne-Marie exclusively marketed their Cabernet/Merlot blend to foreign buyers before venturing into the North American market. Despite not having their own winery at that time, they took a daring step by purchasing land on the secluded Red Mountain.
Since their first vintage in 1987, the Hedges family has focused their passion on Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, emphasizing the concept of terroir. Anne-Marie's upbringing in the Champagne region of France inspired the construction of a French-style chateau amidst their Red Mountain vineyards.
"Notes of spiced plums and blackberries with hints of coffee, sage, dark chocolate and cigar box. Full and chewy, with a firm grip of fine tannins and a mellow dark-berry center-palate. Ripe and juicy with a spiced finish. A blend of cabernet sauvignon, merlot, syrah, cabernet franc, malbec and petit verdot."
-James Suckling
"Reddish black bramble fruits, red currants, bright cinnamon, clove, vanilla and a touch of chili pepper, cocoa, toasted seeds, and a touch of earthy graphite. Nice structure, good length and lovely flavors of fruit, spice, and earth. This wine has a classic Hedges style with a modern touch, very enjoyable now and will age for years to come."
