Massican is a Napa Valley winery founded by winemaker Dan Petroski as an ode to the Mediterranean and his time living in Italy. After nearly 15 years making Cabernet Sauvignon at Larkmead, Petroski turned his attention to fresh, vibrant white wines inspired by Italy’s coastal and inland regions. The name Massican comes from Monte Massico in Campania, near Naples, where Petroski’s family has roots. Today, Massican works with 10 grape varieties from 16 vineyards across California’s North Coast, including Italian varieties such as Tocai Friulano, Ribolla Gialla, Greco, Falanghina, and Fiano.
The wines emphasize freshness, texture, and bright acidity. Grapes are hand-harvested at daybreak, whole-cluster pressed, and fermented separately in French oak, stainless steel, and larger oak vessels. The result is a distinctive style that combines California sunshine with the salty, citrus-driven character of Mediterranean white wines. Floral aromas, bright citrus, mineral notes, and lingering salinity make Massican’s wines particularly versatile and food-friendly.
