Syrah is one of France’s most important red grape varieties, with its spiritual home in the Northern Rhône, where it produces some of the country’s most distinctive and age-worthy wines. In appellations such as Côte-Rôtie, Hermitage, Cornas, and Crozes-Hermitage, Syrah is known for its combination of dark fruit, floral aromatics, pepper, savory spice, and firm but refined structure. Northern Rhône Syrah tends to emphasize freshness, minerality, and savory complexity rather than sheer ripeness, with the region’s continental climate, granite and schist soils, and steep vineyards shaping its character. While Syrah is now grown throughout the world, the Northern Rhône remains the benchmark for the grape’s more elegant, aromatic, and terroir-driven style.
"A dark garnet, barely translucent at the center. On the nose, rich cherry cordial and framboise, with cedar and sandalwood. It smells distinctly of origins in a warm climate. On the palate, medium-bodied with balanced acidity and more juicy red and black fruits, red- and blackcurrant There's almost something Tuscan about the freshness and immediacy: the fruit steps up, presents, and steps aside in a moderate length finish. There is clear Syrah character here, though far less rotundone (black pepper) than Chez Graillot in the Northern Rhône. A delicious, continental red built for Mediterranean food."
