The Southwest wine region of France, often referred to as the Midi, stretches from the Rhône Valley to the Spanish border along the sun-drenched Mediterranean coast. As one of the country’s largest and most diverse wine regions, it boasts a winemaking heritage that traces back to Roman times. Once known for mass production, the area has undergone an impressive revival, now producing a range of high-quality wines — from robust reds like Grenache and Syrah to crisp whites like Picpoul de Pinet and even the sparkling Crémant de Limoux, which some believe predates Champagne. With its warm climate, diverse soils, and forward-thinking winemakers, the Midi remains a vibrant and evolving part of France’s wine scene.
