In 1990, Royal Tokaji was established by the renowned author Hugh Johnson and a small group of investors. Their mission was to preserve Hungary’s esteemed wine legacy, which had been endangered after the fall of Communism. Tokaji, the original sweet white wine renowned as the "cult wine" of the 18th and 19th centuries, hails from the Tokaj wine region, the pioneer in classifying vineyards. In the late 17th century, Prince Rakoczi meticulously classified the region's vineyards into great first growths, first growths, second growths, and third growths. Among these, Royal Tokaji owns five first and second growth vineyards, including the prestigious Mézes Mály—one of Hungary's two great first growths.
The winery crafts an outstanding array of wines, ranging from dry to sweet, including unique single-vineyard aszú (botrytis-affected) wines and Essencia, the free-run juice of botrytised “raisins.” Each wine derives its distinctive character from the diverse volcanic soils of the classified vineyards, the use of indigenous grapes and yeast, traditional winemaking techniques, and meticulous barrel aging in the winery's ancient 13th-century underground cellars. A hallmark of all Royal Tokaji wines is their exquisite balance of richness and vibrant acidity.
"Pale gold color with delicate aromas of exotic fruits and spice. Light and fresh on the palate with hints of white peach, the wine is medium sweet with an excellent acid balance, a silky texture and a clean, long , crisp finish."
