- Saumur
The original sparkling wine of the Loire Valley, Sparkling Saumur, has a heritage dating back to the 1830s. Saumur, surrounded by vineyards and constructed above an intricate network of caves, earns its reputation as the Reims of the Loire. With the 19th-century Champagne market boom, it's no surprise that Saumur rode the wave of enthusiasm for bubbles.
Saumur predominantly features a core of pale, tough, chalky limestone, its western border extends into Anjou, characterized by black schist soils. To bear the Sparkling Saumur designation, the wine must be crafted from a minimum of 60% Chenin Blanc or Cabernet Franc. This is followed by a secondary fermentation in the bottle and a maturation period of at least 9 months sur latte.
The remaining permissible grape varieties, constituting less than 40% of the blend, include Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pineau d’Aunis, Gamay, Grolleau Gris & Noir, and Pinot Noir.
Aged for at least 12 months in the bottle, this wine presents itself with a straw hue tinged with gray and boasts exquisite, fine natural bubbles. Continuously effervescent, it offers a delightful aroma featuring intricate notes of white fruits, complemented by hints of almond and toasted nuances. On the palate, it delivers a prolonged flavor profile highlighted by mineral undertones and white fruit accents. The intricate taste harmoniously blends smoothness and liveliness, making it an ideal choice for an aperitif with appetizers or as a companion to seafood dishes.
